Service Program for Older People

You can make a difference in the life of an older person.

You have the power to help older New Yorkers receive affordable mental health care — care that can improve their overall health and help them to age in place with dignity.
  • Ms. F is 73 years old.  She was abused as a child and has struggled with depression and alcohol abuse her entire adult life. When she came to SPOP her brother had just died and she was lonely and was drinking heavily.  Working with her therapist, she learned to manage her feelings of grief, sadness and isolation, improve her self-care, and reduce her alcohol consumption.  Today Ms. F is sober and is working as a volunteer in a community thrift shop. She has also lost weight — and she feels better both physically and psychologically!
  • Ms. T is 93 years old and is wheelchair-bound due to severe arthritis. She is unable to travel to the SPOP clinic, so her therapist visits her at home each week. Therapy has helped her to overcome the feelings of isolation, anxiety, frustration, and anger that she experienced as she became more frail, and she has also developed strategies to improve her relationship with her caregiver. Today she is happier, more comfortable, and is able to acknowledge and accept the challenges of growing older.
