Executive Director Nancy Harvey participated in the 2011 Geriatric Mental Health Foundation invitational Conference on Model Programs for Home-Based Mental Health Services to Older Adults. SPOP was one of ten mental health agencies invited to participate in this ground-breaking conference on the future of home-based geriatric mental health care. Nancy Harvey presented a paper on SPOP's nationally recognized Homebound Services program.
For forty years SPOP has provided mental health services for older New Yorkers. Contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations help SPOP reach out to the most frail seniors in our community, particularly those who are homebound. The story of Mrs. D is just one example of how SPOP has changed lives:
Mrs. D. is an 81-year-old single woman with a long history of major depressive episodes. She has been hospitalized several times and was referred to SPOP’s Homebound Services program following her last hospitalization two years ago. At the start of treatment, she was confined to her home due to a combination of psychological and physical conditions and was completely isolated from family and friends. She started receiving weekly home visits from the SPOP clinical staff and responded well to her treatment plan. Since then, she has remained in her home – no further hospitalizations – and has begun physical therapy, re-engaged with friends, and even resumed social activities outside, including her life-long passion for attending opera performances. SPOP truly made a difference for Mrs. D.
